Writers Group
Our Writers Group is a space to hear second drafts of scripts out loud and learn from other writers. Meeting once a month in person at Broadway Cinema, Nottingham, and every three months via Zoom, we read a writer’s script out, then feed back with instant reactions – all in the spirit of support.
Upcoming session: 24th of June
ABOUT THE WRITERS GROUP
The Writers Group provides a social space that gives writers the priceless opportunity to hear their own words out loud, whilst getting feedback from people who understand what it means to put pen to page.
The Writers Group is for anyone who considers themselves a scriptwriter: you don’t need to be “professional”.
In-person sessions take place at Broadway Cinema, once a month, on Tuesday evenings, 6-9pm.
Online sessions take place every three months via Zoom, on Tuesday evenings, 7-9.30pm.
Places for both are limited, so sign up.
The scripts we read at both in-person and online sessions are selected in advance, drawn from submissions. To put your script up for consideration, get in touch via the sign up form below.
Please don't submit first drafts. If nobody has read your script apart from you, then sign up for Script Swaps instead.
HOW IT WORKS
Ahead of the Writers Group, sign-ups are emailed with the session’s scripts, along with content warnings. In the session, the group admin will assign characters (to those who are happy to read out loud – no pressure if not!), and we will read the script from beginning to end.
After reading, we will go straight into feedback for the writer, which can be guided by specific questions they want us to answer. After a short break, we will go into reading the second script, followed by feedback. If the first script is much longer than one hour in length, we will only read one script.
The rest of the session is social time, to get to know your fellow writers. As Broadway Cinema is a café-bar, there is plenty of opportunity to meet and chat. Online sessions are shorter, but there is still time to mix.
To book your place, complete the form below, with your name, contact details, and if you have a script you would like reading out.

Writers group FAQs
-
For our Writers' Group: Stage plays (minimum length 40 pages), TV (minimum 23 pages), film (minimum 70 pages) or audio (podcast/radio, minimum 30 pages). They must be formatted correctly (Click HERE to download our formatting guide).
-
Tick that box on the booking form. We will be in touch with what to do next. Please note that your script might not necessarily be read in the next session, although we will always try to accommodate it as soon as possible.
-
Please don't bring first drafts. If nobody has read your script apart from you, then sign up for Script Swaps. Our Writers Group sessions are for hearing "good-ish" drafts out loud, to get feedback from supportive and knowledgeable peers. We want to make the most of that.
-
No. What we want are "serious" writers. That means you might have been paid to write before, but maybe not. If you are driven to see your writing performed on professional platforms, and dedicated to your own development, then that's good enough for us.
-
There aren't enough opportunities to get feedback on full-length scripts. This is why Script East Midlands exists. If you want feedback on a short script (eg. short film, the beginnings of a play, etc.) then sign up for Script Swaps.
-
Everyone is welcome at our Writers Group. Our in-person sessions are in wheelchair-accessible spaces. If there is anything else we can do to help you feel comfortable and fully included, please let us know in advance of the session.
-
If you have a script to share, but prefer to receive feedback in a particular form (e.g. written rather than spoken), then that is absolutely fine – we can accommodate your needs. Just let us know in advance.
-
Yes! Please do! The idea of this group is that we are a community of writers supporting writers. That can only be sustainable if people come, even when they don't have a script to share. Your point of view, experiences, and presence are very much needed. Especially when it comes to reading a script aloud. We need lots of readers for that!
-
If you aren’t confident or comfortable with reading out loud, you really don’t have to. Your opinion is still important, though, so come along, have a listen, and share your thoughts. If you prefer to share written feedback after the session instead of spoken feedback during the session, that is also fine. Please note, we aren’t “acting” in the session, just reading lines out, so you don’t need to be a great performer.
-
Sorry, no. This is an initiative which is all about developing our regional network. We define the East Midlands as Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland.
-
Sorry, no. Our Writers Group sessions are not performances, or showcases for our writers. They are simply a bubble for us writers to feel protected from judgment, and supported by friendly peers who share their pain. If you are curious about scriptwriting, why not sign up to our Script Club (on Patreon), which is full of creative writing tips. Or, maybe join one of our beginners workshops?
-
Sign up for free via our booking form. Sessions are limited to 20 people. You can usually only book for the next session, unless we have an online session coming up, which are always in addition to our in-person group.
